Description

Appomattox Court House was the site of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865. It is once more a sleepy little Virginia village. This handbook outlines events of the 1864 Virginia campaign. In it, Union forces broke through Confederate defenses at Petersburg and pursued Lee's army until all routes of retreat were cut off. Illustrating the narrative are historical photographs, brief biographies of key figures, and period newspaper accounts. A "Visiting the Village Today" section describes each historic building open to the public and gives a full color photo of it.
