Established in 1854 to guard the San Antonio and El Paso Roads, Fort Davis, now a National Historic Site, protected stagecoaches, mail stations, and the Mexican border from Comanches and Apaches. Black-and-white photographs and maps illustrate events culminating in the railroad's arrival and west-Texas frontier settlement.
