Description
Woolsey gives a contemporary insight into the medical practices of the period, the role of women, and the routine of a soldier's hospital recovery. Woolsey shares stories of hardship and courage based on her three years in the wards. She served as Superintendent of Nurses at the Fairfax Seminary Hospital during the Civil War and was a hospital manager in the late 19th century. She also worked as a teacher at the Lincoln Industrial School for Freedman in Richmond, VA and the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute where she taught sewing and housework classes to newly-freed African Americans.
